As part of the weekend’s events and following a public meeting at Oxford Town Hall on 5 September 2014, Banbury Labour Party member Chris Farman was presented with a certificate by Jim Jump, Secretary of the International Brigade Memorial Trust, at a celebratory party and concert at Iffley Road’s Gladiator Club on Saturday 6 September.
Chris is part of a team that have raised over £5000 for a memorial in Bonn Square, Oxford, to the Oxfordshire volunteers who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War. They are a little short of the required sum so any donations are welcome.
Three Banbury Labour Party stalwarts, John Christie, Sue Christie and Mike Beal, calling themselves ‘Los Tres Socialistas’, formed a scratch combo to sing songs of resistance and freedom, and they went down a storm.
Chris has written a book with Valery Rose and Liz Woolley to be published in October 2014: No Other Way – Oxfordshire and the Spanish Civil War 1936-39, with a foreword by Prof Tom Buchanan.
The book costs £5, plus postage and you can pre-order by contacting Chris – email@example.com Tel: 01869 336190
All proceeds to the Oxfordshire International Brigades memorial.
