Oxfordshire County Councillor Mark Cherry is submitting a motion to the full Council on 1 July 2014, which will ask the people of Oxfordshire what they think about test drilling for shale gas.
If the motion is agreed people will be able to send in their views via the County Council website. Mark Cherry says, “The motion is a quick and inexpensive way of getting a snapshot of public opinion on what is rapidly becoming a hot political potato in Oxfordshire.”
A 347sq mile expanse in the north of the county has been identified as a possible source of shale gas by the British Geological Survey.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change is currently deciding whether to grant a licence that would allow firms to tap an area for gas between Banbury, Bicester and Kidlington.
Mark Cherry adds, “There are serious concerns about the environmental impacts of shale gas drilling and I believe the people of Oxfordshire should be given the chance to tell the Council what they think.”
