I have been campaigning in my Ruscote ward the last few days. Awash with St George’s flags. If there was an award for the most patriotic corner of Cherwell, then I am certain Bretch Hill would win it. I am chuffed to bits by this and as your local councillor am very proud of this outbreak of pride in our shared identity. I am a proud Banburian, born at the Horton Hospital. I am proud to be English, of our ever hopeful footballers and all-conquering rugby team, even though I am equally proud of my Welsh roots and that beautiful little country. Together two great countries, with two more in Scotland and Northern Ireland, make an even greater one, Britain, and we have achieved great things in our history together. It is because of my patriotism and my love for this great country that I am voting for Britain to Remain a member of the European Union. We are not a small, insecure and paranoid country. We are England. We are at our best when we engage with Europe and the world to lead it in standing up for ourselves and others. Our proximity to it as well as our history shows that Europe will always be integral to our destiny. That is why I want us to Remain. Being in there standing up for Britain, its values and its interests. Not running away. That is why I am voting Remain and I hope you will too.
