Labour County Councillors, visited Banbury Food Bank this week, to offer their support to this vital service. Councillors Surinder Dhesi, Mark Cherry and Mike Beal donated a total of £3500 from the Oxfordshire County Council Big Society Fund to help purchase a van for food distribution in Banbury.
Food Bank Project Manager Dave Stapleton said they helped 20% more people in 2014 than the year before – 800 children and 1200 adults. Dave said there were now four distribution centres – Banbury Town, Bretch Hill, Hardwick and Grimsbury – and the whole operation was run by volunteers and completely funded by donations.
Cllr Mark Cherry said, “Starting this financial year 2015/2016, Oxford County Council have now scrapped the Big Society Fund which was a very effective way for local councillors to support local projects and give them a much need financial boost. In addition to Banbury Food Bank I used some of my fund to help Frank Wise school fund a new drama room.”
Mark continued, “Expect more austerity cuts in vital Oxfordshire Council Services – David Cameron should hold his head in shame.”
