Only a stone’s throw from Banbury, across the border in Northamptonshire, RAF Croughton, or rather the US Air Force base Croughton, is to receive almost £200m of Washington investment to make it one of the largest intelligence hubs outside mainland United States.
Already implicated in mass surveillance and drone strikes and rumoured to have been central to the monitoring of the mobile phone of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, USAF Croughton has become the centre for clandestine and classified US communications in Britain.
Labour MP Tom Watson, a former defence minister, said: “The new spend on facilities at RAF Croughton is a shocking revelation. There can be no doubt now that communications activities there must be thoroughly reviewed, and arrangements governing use of the base updated.”
