At a meeting on Wednesday 3 July, the Oxfordshire County Education Scrutiny Committee recommended that the consultation on a proposal to end free transport for children not attending their nearest school should begin again, with more information about the impact on children, parents and individual schools and with more time for people to express their views.

Terry Davis, Secretary of Banbury Constituency Labour Party said, “Many parents in the areas affected are not only upset about the proposals themselves but the way in which the Tory leadership tried to rush them through without proper consultation and deliberately hid their intentions from the electorate before the May County Council elections.”

He also said that he was glad that the County Council are beginning to see sense, because the existing document was not fit for purpose.

Terry concluded, “All the Labour Councillors voted in favour of the recommendation to start the process again, whilst the Tory members were split down the middle; some getting cold feet and agreeing to start again, whilst others still wanted to continue with the existing flawed consultation document, despite a groundswell of opposition from parents and school governors.”
