David Orr, the NHF’s chair, says ‘More than half of families hit by the bedroom tax have been pushed into debt during the first three months of the policy.’

51 of the NHF’s biggest members found more than half of their residents affected by the bedroom tax – 32,432 people – could not pay their rent between April and June

Labour have pledged to abolish the tax if they gain power but in the meantime 180,000 households  deemed to be “under-occupying” with two bedroom homes  compete for only 85,000 one-bed homes that became available in 2012.
